Walter J. "Wally" Gengler, 78, of Punta Gorda, FL , formerly of Chicago, IL passed away March 12, 2014. He was the son of Marcel and Amelia (nee Kirchens) Gengler, born December 21, 1935 in Chicago, IL. Walter served in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked for the Chicago Bears and Cubs for 10 years before working for Federal Life Insurance for 30 years. Walter was a member of the Elks, Moose, St. Andrew's Golf Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Volunteered for the Punta Gorda Police Dept. He was a member of a men's group called the Romeos "Retired Old Men Eating Out" . Walter will be greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Janet (nee Fortman); brother-in-laws, Jack Van Dermeir and Edmund (Pat) Fortman; sister-in-laws, Fran Rafferty, Pat Fortman, Betty Noble, Mary Jane Fortman and Margot Fortman. His cousins and many nieces and nephews will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Amelia Pierce and Marcella Van Dermeir and numerous brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws. A memorial mass will be held at 11am, Monday, March 31, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda. Memorial donations may be made to Animal Welfare League of Port Charlotte.
