Walter L. Currence, Jr.

Walter Lee "John" Currence, Jr., 77, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away peacefully on November 27, 2016 with his devoted wife, Beverly, family and friends by his side. He was born July 25, 1939 in Elkins, WV to Anna and Walter Currence, Sr. John served in the US Navy aboard the USS Leyte and Wrangell. John spent most of his life in law enforcement. In 1961 and 1969 he entered the Maryland State Police Academy, graduating as a Trooper. He was the first Trooper to attend the full six months police academy twice as there were more than three years between resignation and rehire. He spent his first tours assigned to road patrol duties and retired from the Leonardtown Barrack as a Criminal Investigator in 1987. Following his retirement, he moved to Port Charlotte from Chaptico, MD and was employed as a Bridge Tender at the Tom Adams Bridge in Englewood, FL. He enjoyed boating, crossword puzzles, dominoes, NASCAR and watching Tampa Bay Buccaneers football, "Go Bucs!" John was a member of the Maryland State Police Alumni Association, Punta Gorda Elks, and the Moose. John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was very proud of his family and loved them dearly. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Beverly; sons, Christopher (Shelley) Sanders of Kearneysville, WV, Curtis (Kathy) Sanders of Punta Gorda, FL; sister, Lorraine (Rodney) Pugh of Paw Paw, WV; grandchildren, Caitlin, Chloe, Christian, Camden, Kyle and Kevin; and special nephew, John E. (Rosa) Scheck of Olney, MD along with several nieces, nephews and treasured friends. A private service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or perform an unexpected or unsolicited act of kindness in John's memory.
