Punta Gorda

Samuel Adam Cox III passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Punta Gorda, Florida. Born during a hurricane in Tampa, Florida on October 8, 1946—a story he loved to share—Sam lived a life marked by achievement, adventure, and dedication to both his career and family.

Sam grew up in Memphis, Tennessee alongside his brothers Robert and Tim. He distinguished himself as a track and field athlete at Christian Brothers High School before pursuing his passion for engineering at Auburn University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. His brilliant mind and dedication to innovation led him to work on the Apollo space missions in Huntsville, Alabama, contributing to one of humanity's greatest achievements. He later enhanced his expertise with a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University.

During his distinguished career, Sam brought his engineering acumen to several prominent organizations, including IBM, Disney, and FedEx. His professional journey was marked by innovation, leadership, and a commitment to excellence.

Sam was an avid saltwater fisherman who found joy in the challenge of battling Tarpon, Permit, and Redfish. His favorite fishing grounds included Mosquito Lagoon, Key West, and Charlotte Harbor. In retirement, he realized his dream of living the Florida lifestyle, settling in Punta Gorda with his beloved wife Ellen Adams Cox.

Known for his jovial spirit, good sense of humor, and gift for storytelling, Sam touched many lives with his warm personality. He was a man of Christian faith who found peace in his salvation through Jesus Christ. He particularly cherished time spent at his lakehouse on Lake Pickwick, where he created lasting memories with family and friends.

Sam is survived by his wife Ellen Adams Cox of Punta Gorda, FL and Memphis, TN; his son Samuel Adam Cox IV "Adam" (Lalla), and grandsons Jackson Cox and Addison Cox of Austin, TX; and his brothers Robert (Karen) and Tim of Memphis, TN along with numerous cousins he loved. His father Samuel Adam Cox Jr. and his mother Audrey Cox preceded him in death.

A memorial service celebrating Sam's life will be held in July 2025, at his beloved lakehouse on Lake Pickwick, where family and friends will gather to share memories and pay their respects. You may contact the close family for more details. Instead of flowers, a donation can be made to Fish with a Hero in Punta Gorda, FL, or the charity of your choice.

Sam's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, the technological advancements he contributed to, and the family he loved dearly. His faith, warmth, and love for storytelling will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
