Richard D. Condon

February 19, 1935 — December 3, 2015

Richard Denis Condon, 80, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 3, 2015. He was born in New Haven, CT in 1935, graduated from Trinity College in 1957, and married Patricia Alexander in 1958. While living in Ridgefield CT, they had four children together. After starting his career humbly as a milkman in Clinton, CT, he worked for PerkinElmer Corporation for 20 years in Connecticut and Illinois, progressing from research and development to senior management. Later in his career he served as president, board member and consultant for several analytical instrument companies; treasurer of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra; and Commodore of Isles Yacht Club. Richard was a long-time New Englander, living in Atkinson, NH; Waitsfield, VT; Jamestown, RI; and Essex, MA prior to moving to Punta Gorda where winter didn't interfere with his love for sailing and cruising. He was most comfortable at the helm in Breton red shorts, sockless, with top-siders on his feet and a salty breeze in his hair. Richard was a brilliant man, pioneering inventions in gas chromatography and nautical speedometers, but he was also wise. He cleverly orchestrated home clambakes and wood choppers weekends, not just to get boats painted and firewood put up for the winter, but really to bring extended family and friends together compassion and love in his language. He will be missed. Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia; brother, James; daughter, Susan; sons, Richard, James and Peter; grandsons, Timothy and Benjamin; granddaughters, Brianna and Lauren; and great-granddaughter, Riley. He was predeceased by his parents, Marie and James and brother, Frank. No service is planned at this time.
