Peter M. Hughes, 77, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away on December 12, 2019. He was born on February 8, 1942, to Francis and Mary Hughes in Englewood, NJ. Peter was a thoughtful man, always willing to lend a hand or help fix something. Very quick-witted, he was known as the “Punny Guy,“ by his family for his ability to create a smile and fill the room with laughter.
Peter was a talented sportsman throughout high school, involved in baseball and football. He played for the New Jersey Oaks semi-pro football team following serving in the U.S. Navy, where he trained aviators in flight simulators. Peter loved to tinker and fix things, particularly computers, which led to his career with Microwave Semi-Conductors as an Electronics Technician. He relocated to Punta Gorda in 1977 from Middlesex, NJ and in 1994 became a member of the San Antonio Catholic Church, prior to retiring in 2000.
Peter will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Betty Ann; daughters Charlene (Steve) Rainey Kemp; Denise Hughes; Elizabeth (Bruno Maietta) Hughes; and Francine (Raymond) McCreight; sister Ann Schwamb; sister-in-law Gladys Lowrie; 7 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Virginia Conroy.
In lieu of the flowers, memorial denotations may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Port Charlotte.
