Peggy Megiel

July 24, 1931 — August 15, 2012

Margaret J. "Peggy" Megiel, 81, of Punta Gorda left us to go to a better place on August 15, 2012. She was the daughter of Albert and Mary Jane (Morrison) Cunningham, born July 24, 1931 in Flushing, NY. She earned her Bachelor's of Arts in Business from Queens College in 1988, and had a degree as a systems analyst; in addition, she was a licensed real estate agent and travel agent. In her early years, Peggy was involved with the church choir, and taught Sunday School at St. James Episcopal Church; she also enjoyed volunteering as a Cub Scout Mother. She moved to Punta Gorda in 1991 from Douglaston, NY. Peggy was very active in the communities she lived in. She was a member of the American Legion and was active in the PGI Civic Assn. for 15 years, holding the office of President for the Assn and the PGI Civettes. She was the founder and President of the ladies' cancer support group, "Celebrate Life," which she started in late 2000. The group started with just two ladies, and has now grown to over 40 members strong. Some favorite words from Peggy's Irish mother: Irish Blessing May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand. Peggy will be greatly missed by her daughters, Denise (Vincent) Rollo, and Sharon Megiel; son, Robert (Barbara) Megiel; grandchildren, Andrea and Daniel Megiel; Uncle Billy (Hilda) Morrison, and cousins, Debra, Sonya, Elaine, and Arlene Morrison all of Belfast, Ireland. She was preceded in death by her parents. The service in celebration of Peggy's life will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 15, 2012 at The Church of the Good Shepard, Punta Gorda. Memorial donations may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 W Henry St., Punta Gorda, FL 33950; Peace River Wildlife Center, 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway, Punta Gorda, FL 33950 or Punta Gorda Elks Scholarship Fund, P O Box 511598, Punta Gorda, FL 33951-1598.
