Owen Eugene Hanchey

July 21, 1931 — February 5, 2014

Owen "Gene" Hanchey, 82, of Port Charlotte passed away February 5, 2014. He was the son of Cronley and Mable Hanchey, born July 21, 1931 in Akron, OH. Gene was a retired Army Ranger and served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received several recognitions including two purple hearts and an Air Medal. Gene was a retired Captain with Desoto Correctional Institute in Arcadia. Gene was a member of the Moose Lodge, Port Charlotte, First Cavalry Division Association, World Wide Army Rangers, American Legion over 50 years, VFW, Vietnam Brotherhood, and AM VETS. He enjoyed going fishing, boating, gambling, traveling and taking cruises. Honey, Rangers Lead the Way. At Fort Rucker in Alabama the heliport field was re-named Hanchey Army Airfield after Gene. Gene will be missed by his wife, Diane; children, Michaela, Robert cousin, Marie; step-children, Tracy and Katie; several grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his four legged companions, Margarita and Taco . Gene was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother and 1 sister. Inurnment will be at Veterans Cemetery in Florida. To express condolences to the family, please sign the online guest book.
