Norman P. DeSerres passed away quietly on Wednesday, October 20th, at home in Port Charlotte, FL. Norman was born in 1932 to Albert and Imelda DeSerres in Amesbury, MA. With his loving wife of 65 years, Josephine G. (Mayo) DeSerres, he lived in Plaistow and Danville, NH, before retiring to Port Charlotte in 1998.
Norman was a retired Mechanical Engineer for the US Navy, where he worked from 1965-1995 in Boston, with temporary assignments around the country and the world, working on many ships, including the USS Iowa and USS Missouri. Norman had previously worked for MIT, NASA, and the DOT.
Norman was a proud veteran of the United States Airforce, 71st Fighter Squadron, serving from 1951 - 1953, during the Korean War, when he was stationed in Libya. After completing his tour of duty, he met Josephine, and they were married on August 11, 1956.
An alumnus of Amesbury HS ‘51, Norman was known affectionately as “Dessy” to his classmates. He played Center on the Amesbury HS football team (#71) all four years. He also studied at Northeastern University for three years.
Norman was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader, Little League Coach, Pop Warner Football Coach, and Band Parent President while his children attended school.
Norman was a proud member of the American Legion, Port Charlotte Post, NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees, The Retreads Motorcycle Club International (former President), and the “ROMEO CLUB” (Retired Old Men Eating Out). He was also a devout member of the St. Charles Borromeo Parish, the Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. Norman took up Carving as a hobby in his retirement and was natural and extremely proficient.
Norman was predeceased by his three brothers, Albert, Frances, Raoul, and his sister Cecile Marini. He leaves behind his wife Josephine, his five children, and their loving spouses: Theresa Reding (Peter), Norman DeSerres Jr (Yvette), Barbara Howard (Raymond Jr), David DeSerres (Mimi), and Jeannine Delahunty (Joseph Jr). He also leaves behind 11 Grandchildren and Step-Grandchildren, and 7 Great-Grandchildren.
At 4:00 pm the American Legion Post 110, 3152 Harbor Blvd, Port Charlotte will host an Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to cancer research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, stjude.org/donate.
