Lawrence P Gibbs

Lawrence P. Gibbs, 82, went 10-7 no phone, to paraphrase an old police radio transmission on May 25, 2018. He died from complications of Pulmonary Fibrosis with his family in Punta Gorda, Florida. He was born in Frankford, WV on July 24, 1935 to Paul L. and Ina Hazel Gibbs. Moving to Virginia early in life he was raised in Staunton and Charlottesville where he graduated from Lane High School and the Jefferson School of Commerce. He was recruited by the FBI as a stenographer and was the secretary to the Special Agent in Charge of the Academy at Quantico until he met and married his wife Gail and they moved to Washington, D.C. where he served in the Correspondence Section of the White House in the Administration of President Eisenhower. After serving his time in the U.S. Army, receiving his bachelors degree from University of Maryland, he became a Maryland State Policeman and retired as an Assistant Chief of the Operations Bureau. He was then employed by Baltimore Gas and Electric Company as Director of Nuclear Security at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear plant in Lusby. Subsequent to his retirement there, he worked as an emergency responder to disasters for U.S. Health and Human Services having spent many months in New York after the World Trade Center disaster. In his early years, he was active in the JAYCEES, the Calvert County Lions Club, the Calvert County Democratic party and served on several boards and committees appointed by the County Commissioners. He was a longtime member of the Solomons Island Yacht Club and was Commodore in 1990. In his later life, he and his wife Gail, lived in Drum Point on the creek where his most favorite endeavor was catching, cooking and serving crabs to his friends on their back porch in the evenings. They retired to Punta Gorda, Florida in 2017. He is survived by his wife Gail, daughter Kelly, daughter-in-law Jessica, step grandchildren Aidan and Austin of Punta Gorda, FL and brother, C.W. of Warsaw, VA.
