John C. Spurlock, Jr., 90, of Port Charlotte passed away June 10, 2008. He was the son of John C. and Tommie (Hawkins) Spurlock, Sr. born September 29, 1917 in Attalla, AL. He served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. John came to Port Charlotte in 1958 from Greenville, AL and was an educator in Charlotte County. He taught physical education at Peace River, Sallie Jones, and East Elementary Schools before becoming Supervisor of Elementary Education for the School Board. He served as principal at East Elementary, assistant principal at Lemon Bay Junior High, and as registrar for Charlotte High School. He also worked in Adult Education. As a young man, John played minor league baseball; a lover of all sports, he enjoyed being the basketball and football timekeeper for 42 years, spending many of those years at Charlotte High. John loved his family and will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. John will be greatly missed by his wife of 60 years, Frances; daughter, Laurie Spurlock of Orlando; sons, John (Tina) Spurlock III of Port Charlotte and Stephen (Teresa) Spurlock of Newton Falls, OH; sister, Ann Spurlock of Attalla, AL; brother, David (Inez) Spurlock of Birmingham, AL; and grandchildren, Veronica, John IV, and Blake. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Elsie and Mary, and brothers, Jack and Joe. The family will receive friends 10:00-11:00 am Saturday, June 14, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte, with the service in celebration of John's life following at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Gadsden, AL. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 20035 Quesada Ave, Port Charlotte, FL 33952.
