James S. Zachos died in Punta Gorda, FL on November 4, 2018, at the age of 93. He leaves behind his loving wife Alice, his nieces, Ellen Zachos, Elizabeth Zachos, and Sarah Zachos James, and his stepsons, Peter Fellows, James Fellows, and David Simon. His brother Kimon and sister Victoria predeceased him, in 2014 and 2010, respectively. Jim was born in Bennington, NH on February 12, 1925 to Stephen Zachos and Sophia Bacogiannis Zachos, both immigrants from Greece. He spent his childhood in Bennington, and went to high school in Concord, NH. As the oldest son of an immigrant family, Jim shouldered many burdens, always without complaint. The early death of his father left Jim helping to support his family at a very young age, which he did working as a golf caddy. Jim fell in love with the game, and was an avid and gifted player. He still holds the record for club championships at the Concord Country Club, winning the title in 1951, 52, 53, 55, 57, 59, and 1960. At Concord High School (class of 1941), Jim was an excellent student and a star athlete. He served in the army in WWII with the 393rd Engineer Special Service Regiment. After his discharge from the army as a Master Sergeant, he returned to Concord, where he married Anne Fellows. Anne died in 1993 from complications of Alzheimers. Jim spent most of his professional life working for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and served as Chief of Housing Management until he retired. It was at HUD that he met Alice Simon. They married in 1995, living in Concord until they moved to Florida in 2011. Jims friends remember him as a consummate gentleman, always ready to socialize with an irresistible smile. He was a favorite in his large, extended family, beloved for his excellent sense of humor and warm nature. To his nieces, Jimmy was more handsome and glamorous than Clark Gable. He was affectionate, enjoyed a good joke, knew how to entertain, and had a knack for making people feel special and loved. The burial will be performed by Archpriest James Donnelly at the Sarasota National Cemetery on Thursday, November 15th, at 1:30 pm, with full military honors. A memorial service will follow in NH, in Spring of 2019. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 68 North State St., Concord, NH 03301. Memories and sympathy may be shared at LTaylorfuneral.com.
