James E. Smith, 90, of Port Charlotte passed away April 11, 2018. He was the son of James and Helen Smith, born March 30, 1928 in the Bronx, NY. James served in the US Navy. He was a construction foreman for Ceco Corp.,and owned a drywall business before retiring. James was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood and St. Lukes in Ho-Ho-Kus, both in New Jersey, and San Antonio Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, Florida. He was a member of The Elks of Paramus, NJ and served as a Trustee. James moved to this area from Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ in 1992; he volunteered at Bon Secours Hospital (now Bayfront Port Charlotte) and served as president of the auxiliary twice. As a young adult, James was a commercial artist. After retirement, he took up clay sculpting; he also enjoyed fishing. James will be greatly missed by his wife of 66 years, Carol; daughters, Mary Smith, Maureen Brunetto, and Stacy Elfant; sons, Daniel, Kevin, and Michael; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. No services are planned at this time. Memorial donations may be made to The Peace River Wildlife Center. To express condolences to the family, please sign the online guest book.
