Iku “Janie” Fields, 81, of Port Charlotte passed away December 5, 2005. She was the daughter of Kosapro and Tune (Yamada) Kobayashi, born November 6, 1924 in Hosen, Japan. In 1955, she met a young American soldier named Gene and they were married in Tokyo in 1957. She would leave her family and country to relocate to North Carolina where her journey began in the United States. In August of 1958, she gave birth to her only daughter. Nearly twelve years later she became a naturalized citizen of the Untied States. The birth of her first grandchild in 1989 brought her to Florida and she affectionately became Obachun (Japanese for Grandmother), known by most family and friends as “O.” Janie enjoyed playing bingo and listening to the music of Perry Como. She was also an excellent seamstress; however, her favorite pass-time was talking about her grandchildren. Janie will be greatly missed by her daughter, Linda (David) Ferguson, and beloved grandchildren, Ashley and Kimberly, all of Port Charlotte. A memorial service in celebration of Janie’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 10 at First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte. The family requests memorial donations may be made to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238-5788. To express condolences to the family, please sign the guest book. Arrangements are by The Cremation Center of Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Port Charlotte.
