Gilbert George Pokora, 88, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 after a long and brave battle with Parkinson's. Gill was the son of the late George and Anna (nee Bratkowski) Pokora, born on August 1, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Gil grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from South Division High School, He served in the Army Signal Corp in the European Theatre during WWII. While home on leave he met the love of his life, Jean Bartow and they were married in 1944 in Milwaukee. After Gil's returned from the service he and Jean moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where they were both students at the University and during this time their son, Gregory was born. After completing school the family moved to Racine, Wisconsin, where Gil worked for Uarco Business Forms and Case Company. However, his love of teaching lead him to a long career teaching in Racine schools. He last taught English at William Horlick High School and was also a student advisor for the yearbook the Polaris. Gil and Jean spent many summers traveling the world, as well as taking numerous cruises. Gill and Jean retired in 1984, moving to Port Charlotte, FL. He thoroughly enjoyed his time in Florida. He lived on the lake and loved to sit and watch all the different species of birds. Gil was an avid fisherman and was most happy when he could throw out a line. Gil leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jean; son, Gregory; daughter in law, Gail; sister, Arlene(Richard) Lesniewski and several special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Doloras (Ralph) Wroblewski; brother in law, Joe Bartow; sister-in-laws, Katheryn Wallace and Phyllis Finne. The family would like to thank the Palms of Punta Gorda and Tidewell Hospice for their loving and compassionate care. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.
