Francis C. Currie, 89, of Port Charlotte went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He was the son of Frederick and Louise (McNab) Currie, born on January 29, 1923 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. At age 15 he enlisted in the Canadian Army as part of the Black Watch Regiment and at age 17, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on a destroyer in the Battle of the Atlantic and assault on Normandy Omaha Beach. Francis worked for General Electric in the Aerospace Instruments Division then advanced to an instructor and trained new employees in this field. At age 59, he took up Kempo Karate and at age 64 attained his Black Belt. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte and a past Tidewell Hospice Volunteer. Francis will be greatly missed by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Frances (Ellis) Fullerton of Punta Gorda and Judy (Kenneth) Bombaci of Bolyston, MA; son, Robert (Wendy) Currie of Punta Gorda; brother, Clair (Bud) Currie of Canada; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:00 pm, Friday, August 31, 2012 with a service to celebrate Francis' life to follow at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Port Charlotte. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 20035 Quesada Avenue, Port Charlotte, FL 33952 or Animal Welfare League.
