Edward Donald Hum, lovingly known as “Eddie D,” of New Brighton, PA, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, surrounded by the family who loved him most, just days shy of his 68th birthday. Born on February 14, 1957, he grew up in New Brighton, where he developed a deep sense of community and faith.
Ed was a man of deep thought, unwavering faith, and boundless curiosity. He often said, “There is more to life than you are led to believe,” a belief that shaped his journey through spirituality, science, and self-discovery. He spent his life exploring the intersections of faith and knowledge—from the teachings of Jesus to the mysteries of quantum physics. His passion for understanding the world and his place in it was a lifelong pursuit, one he embraced with humility, wonder, and a bit of humor.
A natural teacher and storyteller, Ed often filled in as a lay minister at the United Methodist Church, sharing his insights and convictions with those around him. His professional career led him to work as an avionics technician for Gulfstream, where his meticulous nature and dedication to excellence left a lasting impact.
Ed’s journey of love and family was profound. He was married to Judy Mae Hum for 20 cherished years before her passing. Later, he reunited and remarried Lori J. Taylor Hum, the mother of his eldest child. Both Judy and Lori preceded him in death, leaving behind memories of love and shared lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph Hum and Cynthia Ellen Hum.
He is survived by his daughters, Erin Soltis (Spencer) and Emily Robinson (Zak), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Cynthia Soltis and Archer Soltis. He is also survived by his brother, Norman Joseph Hum (Mara), and his son, Norman Cole Hum (Nicole).
Ed believed in embracing life fully—whether that meant deep conversations over a pint of Guinness, afternoons on the beach with a book in one hand and a beer in the other, or standing up for what he believed was right. He had an unshakable faith in God and humanity, and he always sought to leave the world a little better than he found it.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Ed’s life and legacy. Details will be shared with family and friends.
