Daniel Arthur Rydberg, 76 of Punta Gorda, FL., passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. He was born July 4, 1943, in the Bronx, NY to Arthur and Lilian Rydberg. He passed in the early morning in the presence of his loving wife of 54 years, Maureen Rydberg.
Daniel, aka. Big Dan or “The Swede”, but most memorably as “Poppy”, retired to Florida in October 2014, where he loved to sit on his lanai and watch the animals in the canal. He had a long career with Purvis Systems as an Electrical Engineer for National Defense Contracts. Most notably working with the FDNY during 9/11 and helping to get emergency systems back online.
Daniel proudly served in the US Navy from 1963- 1969, and left honorably as a Petty Officer Second Class, specializing in Naval Submarine Missile systems. During his service, he received a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal (1st award).
He loved to fish, bowl, and play bocce with friends and family. He was an active member of the VA, The Elks, and the American Legion, and could be found with an ice-cold beer and a smile.
Daniel and Maureen spent their time in Florida enjoying sunsets on the beach and creating a wonderful life. He was a fierce protector and believer in the power of family. He will be deeply missed by Maureen, his wife; his son Stephen Rydberg and Daughter in Law Danielle Rydberg; his grandchildren Cassidy (Rydberg) Trickey. Christa Rydberg, Daniel Rydberg, Ani Rydberg, Tahlene Rydberg, and Axel Rydberg and his five sisters; June Visconti, Gay Hardisty, Joy Erreich, Lynn Mordin, and Lee Longobardi. He is pre-deceased by his parents and eldest son Daniel G. Rydberg.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, http://nchv.org/.
