Charles W. "Red" Mills Red Mills, 81, of Punta Gorda, FL went to be with the Lord and with his son, Carroll, on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family. Red was born on March 15, 1929 in Cheraw, SC to Charlie & Margie Mills. He moved to Hardee County in 1941. He worked for Wauchula Motor Sales and later owned his own business Peace Valley Automotive. He moved to Punta Gorda in 1969. He worked for Hopper Crews Ford and then for D.M. Construction until he started his own successful business, All Engine Machine Service. Red was a lifetime race fan. He built cars and was chief mechanic for race cars owned by D.M. Construction and later he and his sons fielded race cars at local tracks. He also had a tire business at the local Punta Gorda race track. His knowledge of cars, especially older models, was vast. Red was known as one of the best mechanics around. Red sold his business and retired in 2004. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren especially if they were altogether at the lake house. He also enjoyed taking family and friends out on his boat. He was a member of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America and enjoyed taking his 1940 Ford to shows where he won many trophies. Red was also a member of Punta Gorda Lodge #115 F. & A. M. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Aletha; his sons Derrell (Carol) Mills and Dennis (Debbie) Mills. His grandchildren, Michelle Jewell, Shana Dandino, Kevin, Clint, Kyle, and Lance Mills; and his great grandchildren Justin, Tyler, Thomas, Carter, Kayla and Lily. He is also survived by 6 brothers and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4th at 2:00 pm at the church Red attended: Cleveland Baptist Church, 6600 Cleveland Drive, Punta Gorda, FL . In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
