LCDR Retired, Bruce A. Bennington, 74, of Punta Gorda passed away December 20, 2007. He was born April 9, 1933 in Washington, DC to John and Miriam (Latterner) Bennington. Bruce enlisted in the US Navy at the end of the Korean Conflict and graduated from the US Naval Academy Class of ?57 and became a Naval Aviator. He served in various squadrons including VS30, VAW12, VAW125, VRF31 in Norfolk, VA area and operated off of Lake Champlain (CVS 39), Saratoga (CVA 60) and the JFK (CVA 67). He was awarded the Navy Air Medal and after retirement he worked as an engineer for a large aircraft company as a Aircraft Accident Investigator and instructor in Aircraft Safety. Bruce traveled most of the military air bases in the US and with over 120 foreign governments worldwide. He will be greatly missed by his sons, Mark of Miami, John of Jacksonville and Matthew of Sarasota; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife Pauline and daughter, Rebekah. A Military service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. A gathering of friends and family on December 23, 2007 between noon and 2:00 pm at his home in Punta Gorda. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 992 Tamiami Trail, Unit C-2, Port Charlotte, FL 33953.
