Arnold C. Atkinson, 93, of Port Charlotte passed away Monday, April 1, 2013. He was the son of Claude and Goldie (nee Gardner) Atkinson, born September 8, 1919 in Fowler, IN. Arnold grew up on a farm in Benton County, Indiana. He graduated from Gilboa High School. Arnold married Evelyn Burns on May 1, 1940. They ran the family farm until 1967, when Arnold retired from farming and then moved to Remington, IN. There he built houses and owned a concrete plant with his cousin Carl Pampel. In the mid 1940's Evelyn's parents built an airport on the their farm. Arnold got his pilot's license and was quite the barnstormer! He started flying solo after only a few hours of instruction! He was a member of Remington Masonic Lodge 351 for 50 years. In 1983, Arnold retired and he and Evelyn moved to Florida. He will be remembered as a fun loving guy who had a large circle of friends, who best knew him as "Arnie". Arnold will be greatly missed by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn; children, Joy and Dennis (Wendy); daughter in law, Bonnie; sister, Doris; grandchildren, Angela, Kristen, Lori, Cindy, Cory, Cassie, Luke and Eric; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Jordan, Lauren, Caitlin, Ryan, Lacie, Morgan, Carter, Lillie, Lane, Mason, Parker and Aiden. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jim and sisters, Dorothy and Esther. A gathering will be 1 to 3 pm, Saturday, May 18, 2013 with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 pm at Stitz Funeral Home in Remington, IN. A memorial service was held in Florida on April 13, 2013 at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Animal Welfare League, 3519 Drance Street, Port Charlotte, FL 33980.
