Antonio V. Mendes

Antonio V. Mendes, 62, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away on June 3, 2021. He was born on June 24, 1958, to Octavio and Maria Mendes in Lisbon, Portugal.  Antonio honorably served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and the United States Air Force.  He retired as a Sergeant from the New Bedford Police Department after 24 years of serving his community.  Antonio was a Scout Master for 22 years, receiving several awards and recognitions.  He was a member of the Mustang Club in New Bedford, MA, the Massachusetts Police Association, and PAPA. He was a devoted New England sports fan and enjoyed camping with his family. 

Antonio will be deeply missed by his wife of 29 years, Barbara; daughter Karrie Mendes of RI; sons Tony Mendes, Jr. of New Bedford, MA, Wayne Estrela of New Bedford, MA, and Nicholas Estrela of Punta Gorda, FL; brothers Jorge Mendes of Wales, Paul Mendes of Portugal, and Victor Mendes of New Bedford, MA; sister Tara (Russell) Bresette of New Bedford, MA; and his 8 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents Octavio and Maria Mendes.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at the Sarasota National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Antonio’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
