Robert "Bob" Oliver, 81, of Punta Gorda went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 24, 2008. He was born September 28, 1926 in Elmira, NY. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1944 and did further studies at Ithaca College and Cornell University in Banking and Accounting. Bob served in the armed forces during WWII and was recalled as a reservist during the Korean War, serving on a Navy amphibious ship in the far east. He began his career in Ithaca Saving and Loan Assoc. and subsequently joined Seneca Federal as an executive assistant in 1955. He became executive vice president and managing officer in 1958 and president in 1968. He was past President of the Central New York Savings and Loan League, and a past Director and Vice Chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York. In recognit9ion of his outstanding leadership and dedicated service, he was awarded "The Man of the Year Award" by the Savings Association League of New York State. He retired in December 1988 and moved to Punta Gorda; he was an avid fisherman and huntsman. Bob will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis; daughters, Sally Rice of Truro, MA and Nancy Wentling of Foxboro, MA; son William Oliver of Onalaska, WA; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service in celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, August 28 at First Baptist Church of Punta Gorda, 459 Gill St. Memorial donations may be made to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or to First Baptist of Punta Gorda.
