Olga M. Nelson of Punta Gorda, Florida transitioned into everlasting life on Friday, December 18, 2020, at the age of 93.
Olga was born on September 21, 1927, to Percy and Olga Gibson in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Olga married her childhood sweetheart, Eddie Nelson, on December 26, 1944; this year would have been their 76th wedding anniversary! Their union produced five children, Eddie Jr., Kenneth, Ronald, Olga Jr., and Doriska. Olga was a devoted wife and loving mother to her five children, pouring her life into theirs.
In the early 1950s, Eddie and Olga migrated to Detroit, MI from Donaldsonville, LA. For many years their church home was Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Detroit, where they were members of the Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver. Following the death of her husband, Olga relocated to Punta Gorda, Florida in 2013.
After raising her five children, Olga fulfilled her life-long dream of higher education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Wayne State University. She loved all types of music, especially Motown, and found delight in attending musicals performed by the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe in Florida. She was a wonderful Creole cook, whose gumbo was widely renown; she was a voracious reader and enjoyed raising roses and Tiger lilies. Most of all, Olga adored her family and cherished every moment she spent with them.
Olga is survived by her son Eddie, Jr., daughters Olga and Doriska, nieces and nephews, Ann, John P, Ricky, Carmen, Darryl, Emily, Darnell, Bill, and Kim. Grandchildren Ronnie, Jr., Brian, Laela, and Ashley and great-grandchildren Shasparay, Aireyon, Adeas James, Xavier, Cameron, Miles, Nala Jae, Audrina, and Kori, numerous cousins, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Percy and Olga Gibson, her brothers Percy, Alcee, and Edward, sisters Dorothy and Anna, her loving husband Eddie, sons Kenneth and Ronald, grandchildren James and Yahel.
Olga was a loving and beautiful spirit who enjoyed life to its fullest! Her beautiful smile lit up a room and she possessed a unique personal style and quick wit. She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.
A funeral mass and Celebration of Life will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Detroit at a future date. In the interim, she will be laid to rest beside her loving husband, Eddie, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made in the name of Olga Nelson to the Equal Justice Initiative. To express condolences to the family and share in celebrating the life of Olga, please visit www.JohnsonTaylorFuneral.com and sign the online guestbook.
